I can’t believe that our local farmers markets will be coming to a close at the end of October. Sharing the many highs and lows of a farmers market season forges strong bonds between the farmers, vendors and artisans who come together each and every week for six months of the year. A feeling of family grows among the market participants as we watch the seasons change together. Some weeks there are wonderful crowds of shoppers, and other weeks it seems like everyone has forgotten all about the market. There are days of beautiful sunshine, pouring rain, high winds, fog, clouds and everything in between. It is Michigan after all.

What is it about the fall that seems to get everyone back on track? Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons. The weather is truly delightful with cool nights and warm days, plus when you live in Michigan the fall colors are really something to behold, enjoy and savor. Nature really puts on an amazing show for us.

“Anyone can give up, its the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.” Dr Seuss
I read this quote and it just blew me away. The author was a bit of a surprise, as it seems to be quite a departure from his ‘Green Eggs & Ham’ or ‘Sam I Am’ prose, but it rings true in regards to many different things that I have lived through over the years. My very own vibrant children have helped me to experience some of these life challenges in ways that I never could have imagined back when they were just little tikes.

Today at the Detroit Rotary luncheon, our speaker inquired as to what my business is, and when I mentioned that I publish Natural Awakenings magazine she gave my very favorite reply: “I love that magazine!” We’ve just recently celebrated our second anniversary issue and I am continually delighted to note more and more positive sentiments about the magazine. They are truly heartwarming, and I never cease to be amazed that this type of positive feedback always seems to find me on the days I need it most. Read more …

This year the Rotary Club of Detroit celebrated it’s 100th anniversary, and while serving as the club president, I got the chance to attend the Rotary District 6400 conference near Chicago and the home of Rotary International. A Rotary District is a group of about 50 local Rotary clubs for a specific geographic region, and our district happens to cover part of Southeast Michigan and part of Southwest Ontario. I’ve been a member of Rotary for over 14 years, and it’s had a very big impact on my life in so many ways that I never could have anticipated. Read more …

Our Women’s Wellness theme this month inspired lots of great articles, including one on natural childbirth choices. Reading them has brought back lots of memories for me. Both my kids are in their twenties now, and they were both born in a hospital, but I did choose natural childbirth with no drugs. I had wanted to work with a midwife then, but didn’t really know of any. Looking back I don’t think that I had the confidence in my own choices to insist on it. I let myself get caught up in what everyone else thought that I should do. It was probably mostly to keep peace in the family. Read more …

This month marks our 2nd anniversary publishing Natural Awakenings for Wayne County, and I am astounded at what an amazing experience it has been. I am blessed to work with such an awesome group of people. I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for all the local businesses and advertisers who help us reach more and more readers each month. The very best part, however, is hearing from readers themselves. When someone calls or emails to tell me that an article or a practitioner that they connected with has made a difference for them, or changed their life for the better, it’s really a thrill, and I know that what I’m doing makes a difference. That’s the stuff that gets me out of bed every morning. Read more …

Daffodils are one of my favorite spring flowers. My mom always loved them too. When bunches of daffodils were for sale at the grocery store, she would buy them as a special treat for herself.
My own love affair with daffodils began at the end of an especially difficult winter. I was trudging out through the snow to warm up the car, and I just happened to spot a large clump of bright yellow daffodils that had poked their heads right up through the snow. I remember just standing there transfixed for a moment. They were the first real sign of springtime that year, and also a signal to me that I had made it through that long winter and there was hope and spring within my grasp. Read more …
