When you choose to live in Michigan year around, you just don’t let a little bit of snow slow you down. Oh, we might moan and groan a bit, but the bottom line is that if it was really all that bad we wouldn’t choose to live here, right? Personally, I love the change of seasons. I believe it helps keep life interesting and I strive to take some time out to appreciate the best moments of each season. It is simply a matter of perception. Take an ice storm, for example. There is nothing quite as breathtaking as the early morning sun reflected from all the ice-coated trees, especially if you have the luxury of being able to stay home and enjoy the scenery. If your schedule doesn’t grant you that luxury, however, you may be more inclined to give the scene a cursory glance and grumble all the way to your car.  Read more …

New year, new you! Making changes for the better and improving ourselves is something we all talk about quite a bit. But change isn’t always easy and it’s not usually fun. Even when we genuinely want things to improve, we may think it best if the other person made some changes. Recent personal experience has shown me that big changes in all parts of your life at once can be pretty overwhelming.  Read more …

There’s something about the end of the calendar year that leads to reflection on the past year, along with some assessment of where I’m at on my path in life.  There are so many opportunities to become distracted along the way.  It seems like holiday gatherings and spending more time with family are both enjoyable and yet a little bit stressful. There is something very appealing about the idea of simplifying one’s life. Maybe thoughts of a serene and peaceful existence come to mind. In real life, however, it’s not quite like that. I really wasn’t prepared for all of the emotions that are attached to all of this ‘stuff,’ either.  Read more …

As a relative newbie in the world of entrepreneurs, I must say that I am amazed at the vast skill set that is required of a typical small business owner.  I have had the luxury of working for someone else for most of my working career, and I have to say that over the years I have had the occasional naïve thought that perhaps I could do something better than what was being done.  Read more …

My yoga journey began a few years ago at the House of Yoga in Berkley.  My first teacher was a wise woman named Jane, who lured me in to her Sunday morning “Gentle Yoga” class.  I have to admit I was a little bit intimidated by yoga, but this class sounded interesting and I was pleasantly surprised to find I was more flexible than I realized. Remember when summers seemed to last an eternity? I’m not sure exactly when that changed – maybe it has been a gradual shift over time. Now, if I don’t make an effort to get outside and experience the change of seasons it would be easy to forget that its happening. Nature is a great teacher in so many ways if only we can be still long enough. Read more …

Natural foods are very near and dear to my heart. I’m not a master gardener by any stretch of the imagination, but I so want to be. I can just imagine a yard full of fruit trees and a lovely weed free garden and gorgeous perennials, bulbs and flowering trees that bloom in a wonderful sequence from early spring to late fall. But the reality is not quite there yet. Read more …
